I first noticed this fountain when I was taking a photo of the Bat and Ball Hotel, across the road. It's right on the corner of South Dowling St and Cleveland Street.
It was built by the Moore Park Cricket Association to honour members who died in the First World War. The association itself has a rich history and is Australia's oldest, having been formed in 1897. It's not often that you see buildings for public services that have been in use for well over a century. But the Ashfield Fire Station is one of them. It was built in 1888.
I travel on the train line out west quite regularly, and often stop at Ashfield Station. Whenever I'm there I can't help noticing a large sign reading "NEVER TOO LATE" on the side of a building on the northern side.
When I first saw it I thought it might have been an advertisement for a business in that block. Maybe it was for an accountant who was exhorting people to lodge their tax returns? But there was no number of website address nearby on the wall, so I realized it was street art. Recently I did some Googling and discovered that it was by an artist named Elliott "Numskull" Routledge and was commissioned by the Inner West Council in 2016. |
